Cleaning can be downright exhausting. After a hectic day, you probably want to sit down and turn on the TV, not break out the cleaning supplies. However, there are some things in your home that you should make a habit of cleaning every day. While you may already be doing some of these things, we bet there are others that you are missing. Because we use these items so often, it sometimes doesn’t occur to us that we should be cleaning them very regularly.
Lucky for you, we’ve compiled a list of 8 things you should never go a day without cleaning.
Sponges Just because we use sponges to clean doesn’t mean they are clean. Be sure to clean your sponges with warm water and soap (or white vinegar, for a natural but powerful clean) every day. To limit the amount of bacteria your sponges pick up, be sure to keep them away from raw meat juices. To prevent bacteria from contaminating your dishes, discard your sponge after a week or two at the latest.
2. Kitchen Counter
Since you know how much bacteria sponges can hold, it probably won’t surprise you to learn that your kitchen countertop can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Think about it: your countertops are constantly in contact with food, household items and even garbage. To prevent bacteria buildup, try wiping down your countertops with vinegar or disinfectant before you go to bed each night.
The TV remote control We’ve heard about the studies. We know that our hands carry bacteria, even though we usually wash them often. And since your hands are the main things that touch your TV remote, it’s obvious that it carries bacteria too. Use a disinfectant wipe to limit the spread of germs and viruses.
4. Cell Phone
On that note, you wouldn’t believe how filthy our cellphones can become. This will probably freak you out, but studies say that phone screens are generally dirtier than toilet seats. Ummm, ew! Don’t fret — you can keep your phone clean by investing in both a screen protector and case to limit the amount of germs your phone comes in contact with. Additionally, you can use a cleaning spray on some paper towel to wipe down your screen, as well as the rest of your phone.
Tea towels Again, anything your hands come into frequent contact with will pick up and store germs. Add to that food and spills, and you have dirty dish towels. While you can go weeks without washing your dishtowels, consider swapping them out and washing them daily to limit germs in your kitchen.
Your dishes When you’re tired, a sink full of dirty dishes is often the last thing on your mind. However, leaving dirty dishes for long periods of time causes bacteria to build up and can attract fruit flies, bugs and even pests. So, just wash it!
Bathroom vanities We typically spend a lot of time in front of the bathroom mirror brushing our teeth, doing our hair, putting on makeup, etc. So it’s no surprise that your bathroom counters can harbor a ton of germs. Try to do a thorough bathroom cleaning once a week, but try to wipe down your vanities with a disinfectant every day.
Kitchen floors While all floors get dirty over time, kitchen floors get the most wear and tear. Between food, garbage, and pets (my dog drools a lot), kitchen floors tend to take more abuse than others. Even if you sweep and swiffer every day, you’ll remove tons of bacteria from your kitchen.
