Cleaning the toilet is one of the least desirable household chores, and not everyone wants to use harsh, store-bought cleaners. Fortunately, we have some tips to help you prepare your own gentle and effective alternative.
Homemade cleaners are great for several reasons. First, it’s often cheaper to make your own products than to buy them from commercial outlets-especially if you prefer an all-natural formula-and you have the peace of mind of knowing exactly what your cleaning products do and don’t contain. Plus, you have the ability to customize important aspects such as fragrance or carrier (liquid, powder, etc.) to your preferences.
Here’s a great recipe for non-toxic liquid toilet bowl cleaner.
To make this version, you will need the following
1/4 cup liquid castile soap
1 3/4 cups water
2 tablespoons baking soda
8-10 drops of essential oils
With this recipe, you can use the scented soap and essential oils of your choice. Lavender soap has a relaxing scent, while lemon, orange, eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils have an invigorating scent.
Tip: you can also add a little cornstarch to the mixture.
You can also keep it simple. In another recipe, all you need is baking soda, vinegar and a strong disinfectant essential oil of your choice.
For those who prefer solid cleaners to liquids, but don’t like having to scoop out the powder, another ingenious way is to squeeze the powder into handy little pills: use an ice cube tray! Pour the pills into the toilet and voila, everything is clean! Let’s see how this version works.

Materials
– 1-1/2 cups baking soda
– 1/2 cup citric acid
– 30 drops lemon essential oil
– 30 drops lavender essential oil
– 30 drops peppermint essential oil
– Small amount water

Instructions

1. Mix together all the ingredients except the water.

Put the baking soda in a bowl, and dump the citric acid in on top. As you mix, slowly pour in the essential oils and mix until well-combined. Add a bit of water so it all sticks together.

That’s when you’re going to transfer it to the ice cube tray to shape it, as shown above. Make sure to press down on the mixture so it gets the shape of the tray and all the ingredients stick together.

2. Let it sit overnight and store it.

Let the toilet bombs sit overnight so they keep their shape. After that, they’ll be sturdy enough to toss in a mason jar until you need them.

When you’re ready to use one of the homemade toilet bombs, simply place one in the toilet bowl and let it work its magic. After a few minutes, flush. The toilet will be squeaky clean and smell great too.

Additional tips

  • Use your favorite essential oils. Other appropriate combinations are lemon and eucalyptus or orange and rosemary.
  • If you want different scents, split the recipe in half and make one part with one combination of essential oils and one part with your other favorites.
  • Need to clean the tub?
  • Fill it with water and add a few of these bombs (the same goes for the kitchen and bathroom sinks).
