You don’t know how many times I’ve lived in a rental apartment over the years and discovered that the toilet was clogged and had no plunger. Then I’ve rushed to the nearest hardware store to buy one. And sometimes, even after vigorous unclogging, the clog doesn’t go away.

Start by pouring at least one-half cup of liquid detergent directly into the toilet bowl. Let it sit for half an hour. During this time, the weight of the dishwashing liquid will cause it to sink deeper into the bowl, eventually covering the clog and unclogging it.

Once the time has elapsed, pour a bucket of very hot water into the toilet bowl, making sure there is no splashing. Be sure not to pour too much water into the bowl so that it doesn’t start to spill over the sides. By pouring hot water into the bowl, you will help the clog to progress and get the toilet working again.
