If it were up to me, I would sleep with a mountain of comforters, down comforters and pillows. However, my husband is not someone who is constantly cold like me, so our bed is pretty simple: fitted sheet, top sheet, one pillow each and a thin comforter. If your bed is also configured this way, I assume we are behind the trend. It’s pretty surprising that people are throwing away their top sheets completely. Here are the reasons why.

In case you’re wondering how fitted sheets came about, they’re designed to keep germs from our bodies from coming into contact with our comforters, comforters and quilts. So, you can wash your sheets and pillowcases regularly, but you won’t have to wash large comforters and such as often. “A real bed needs a bottom sheet, a top sheet, a blanket and some kind of comforter on top,” says Suzanne Pollak, founder of the Charleston Academy of Domestic Pursuits. “That’s the old way.
So why are people abandoning top sheets these days? Well, there are several reasons. First, not using a top sheet saves time when making the bed. Instead of putting on a flat sheet, just put the comforter on top of the fitted sheet and that’s it. Second, many people don’t like sleeping with a top sheet because it wraps around their legs in the morning anyway. This may sound silly, but the tendency to not use a top sheet is very strong.
In fact, Los Angeles-based linen company Parachute reveals that nearly 40% of its customers only want a fitted sheet and have no desire for a flat sheet. For this reason, the company offers many different bedding packages. Ultimately, whether you sleep with or without a top sheet depends entirely on personal preference – and the (slightly lazy – yes, I said it!) Millennial generation seems to have decided that top sheets just aren’t for them.
